Long-Form Comes To Bridgy Fed

Up until now, Bridgy Fed has only supported the bridging of microblogging content. Even when we bridged articles from the web or from Article types in ActivityPub, ATProtocol-based microblogs would only receive a link to the article rather than the content of the long-form post.

One of the main reasons was the lack of a long-form standard in the Atmosphere. But, recently, that's changed with the introduction of the fledgling new standard.site lexicon, a grassroots standard built by ATProtocol-based long-form platforms Leaflet, pckt, and Offprint. Since its launch, numerous other platforms and blogs have adopted it, including Bluesky and Blacksky's official blogs.

That's definitely a standard if we've ever seen one!

So, starting today, we're bridging web articles and ActivityPub Article types to and from standard.site.

Let's talk about how it works from each side of the open social web.

Bridging from the Atmosphere to the Fediverse and web

If you have an Atmosphere account on Bluesky, Blacksky, or any other PDS provider and have already bridged your account, all your standard.site-based posts should automatically start bridging.

Most Atmospheric long-form tools also already allow you to announce your article to microblogging platforms. So, we're taking it a step further and also bridging those as attachments to your articles over the bridge. That means, users on platforms like Mastodon will see the announcement with the article attached, but platforms that support long-form like WordPress and Ghost will get the whole article, and both will be treated as the same post across the Fediverse.

That's it. Just bridge it and forget it.

Bridging from the Fediverse and web to the Atmosphere

If you have a Fediverse account on a long-form platform like WordPress or Ghost, or a website that's already bridged, your articles will now automatically flow into the Atmosphere as standard.site documents. We also recently added a feature that makes Fediverse Article microblog announcements flow to Atmosphere microblogs.

To show up in most Atmosphere long-form readers, however, you will need to take an extra step to verify ownership of your content.

Standard.site has verification methods for both publications and documents. For publication verification, you'll need to add a /.well-known/site.standard.publication endpoint to your domain. More details can be found in our docs. Your documents will also require a <link> tag to associate with a standard.site document; you can find out how to get your bridged aturi in our docs as well.

Once you've set that up, you'll show up across the numerous long-form reading platforms already available in the Atmosphere.

Let the Blogs Bridge

We're so excited to finally bridge new kinds of content over Bridgy Fed. Long-form across different networks is now connected in the same way microblogs have been since the launch of Bridgy Fed, and we've tried to implement them to feel as native to the receiving network as possible.

Bridge your blog, expand your audience, and make every article tap into the power of the wider open social web.

We can't wait to see what you write, no matter which platform you use.
