Bounce from Mastodon to Bluesky
Back in August, we released our first Bounce Beta. It allowed Bluesky users to migrate to Mastodon using Bridgy Fed while keeping all their followers and their bridged follows.
With our next Bounce Beta, you will be able to Bounce your Mastodon account to Bluesky!
In Bounce Beta 2, you'll be able to take your Mastodon account's social graph and migrate or merge it into a bridged profile for your existing Bluesky (or any ATProto), account. This, along with our recent launch of unbridged notification DMs, brings us another step closer to helping people consolidate their social graphs into a single multi-protocol account.
That said, migrating an ActivityPub account is a bit different than an ATProto one, so we wanted to go over what to expect when Bouncing in this direction.
What's Different?
- Your follow graphs will merge rather than be replaced: When a user Bounces from Bluesky to Mastodon, if that Mastodon account was already bridged, we need to drop their bridged ATProto account to complete the process. That's because ATProto doesn't allow a user to merge follower graphs from two accounts. But ActivityPub does allow a user to merge them, which means you won't have to choose which follower graph to keep. All your followers and bridged follows from your Mastodon account, as well as your original bridged ActivityPub profile, come with you!
- Your content will not come with you: When you Bounce your Bluesky account to Mastodon, we're able to bring over your complete Bluesky profile, including all of your posts. When you Bounce your Mastodon account to Bluesky, we won't bring your original profile's content with you. If you're merging your Mastodon account into a profile that's already bridged, however, all that bridged content will remain.
Where Will You Bounce?
We're so excited to bring people a credible exit from not just platforms, but also protocols. We believe services like Bluesky and Mastodon are only entry points into the open social web, but those entry points should not be a trap into yet another ecosystem. People should be able to change their minds, use the technologies that work best for them, and still connect with their people, no matter what they use.
The promise of the open social web is simple: you can follow anyone from anywhere and leave for another platform at any time. Bounce and Bridgy Fed are finally bringing us closer to fulfilling that promise.
Bounce Beta 2 will be publicly launched on October 20, 2025.
So now it's up to you: where will you Bounce?
